The Pokémon Rangers are a select group of people whose job is to work with Pokémon to protect the bonds of friendship between people and Pokémon. You'll play as either a male or female Ranger, with the other character appearing in the game as your partner. You begin your adventure with an order from the Ranger Union—the Ranger Headquarters—to head to a new region.
The Capture Styler is an indispensible tool for Pokémon Rangers. Rangers use the device to capture Pokémon in the wild. The Capture Styler also allows a Ranger to connect with Pokémon on an emotional level. You can level up the Capture Styler to increase its capabilities, as well as customize it to work how you want it to.
During a capture attempt, Pokémon Rangers circle the Pokémon with a Capture Disc launched from the Capture Styler. Capturing a Pokémon creates an emotional bond with that Pokémon. Captured Pokémon will travel with the Ranger to assist him or her when necessary.
The Pokémon you capture have a variety of abilities that you can put to use, called Field Moves. A Field Move helps you clear obstacles that are in your way. Using a Field Move to clear obstacles is called a Target Clear.
Some targets are too big to be cleared by a single Pokémon. Get the help of multiple Pokémon that have the same Field Move, and perform a Group Target Clear. The Pokémon will use their Field Moves simultaneously to clear huge obstacles!
Pokémon that are accompanying you can also help you when you're trying to capture other Pokémon. A Poké Assist will cause one of the Pokémon in your party to attack a wild Pokémon, making it easier to capture. There are a variety of different Poké Assists, including Grass, Fire, and Water. Make sure you select the best one for dealing with the Pokémon you have targeted!
Summon powerful Pokémon by drawing Ranger Signs with the Capture Styler. When you draw a specific Ranger Sign, you'll call upon a Pokémon that you've already formed a bond with. Using Ranger Signs, it's even possible to summon powerful Legendary Pokémon at will!
When you call upon the powers of Legendary Pokémon, many will help you reach places you never could before! For example, Raikou can leap across chasms, Entei can break through large boulders, and Suicune can charge across rivers. Also, summon Latios or Latias to soar high across the sky!
Once you've progressed far enough through the story, you'll be able to modify your Capture Styler. Use Ranger Points you've acquired during your journey to power up the Styler’s various functions!
Ukulele Pichu can communicate its feelings of friendship through the music of its ukulele! Take advantage of Ukulele Pichu's Assist!
Some Missions will require you to go underwater, where strong currents impede your progress. You'll encounter, and befriend, many Pokémon underwater that can't be found anywhere else!
As the story continues, you'll encounter even more Legendary Pokémon. It seems that their presence has something to do with the Pokémon Pinchers' scheme...
After you capture Entei, the brilliant Nema will modify your Capture Styler to enable a Power Charge. With Power Charge, you can increase the power of your Ranger Signs!
Get together with friends to tackle Wireless Multiplayer Missions! Using local wireless communications, up to four people can play together. To access these Missions, each player needs to first meet Celebi and gain the ability to travel back and forth through time. The Missions involve the players going back in time to solve the mysteries of Oblivia's past. They don't have to be played—but by completing these Missions, the players can change the present to unlock new areas!
The Pokémon that you've captured and befriended in the main story can't be taken back in time to complete Wireless Missions. You'll have to choose from a number of other Pokémon instead. The more Missions you complete, the more Pokémon you'll be able to choose from! At the end of the missions, you can trade slates with your friends, too.
On Dolce Island, one of the islands in the Oblivia region, lives a special Pichu. Everyone calls it Ukulele Pichu because it's always carrying its beloved ukulele! At some point during your adventure, Ukulele Pichu will join you. On your Missions, Ukulele Pichu will sometimes play its instrument to help you!
Not only is Professor Hastings the Chief of Technology at the Ranger Union, he's also the inventor of the Capture Styler! He's the person who gave you the orders to travel to the Oblivia region.
As head of Public Relations for the Ranger Union, Murph will help keep communication lines open between you and Professor Hastings. He's prone to making some mistakes, but he's a valuable member of the team.
Booker lives on Renbow Island, and he'll often travel to Dolce Island to check on the Pokémon there. The old shipbuilder will help you on your journey more than once before it's all over.
Nema loves to tinker with machines, and she's really good at it, too. Not only does she know how to repair a broken Capture Styler, she can also improve its functionality.
Rand is Nema's dad and the Area Ranger in charge of the Oblivia region. When you first encounter him, it seems that he's gotten himself into a spot of trouble...
Rand's wife, Leanne, is a top-notch archeologist. Sometimes she's so busy doing research in her study that Nema has to prepare meals for her parents!
The Rangers aren't the only group patrolling the Oblivia region. The Pokémon Pinchers have been chasing after Pokémon and doing other suspicious things. Not much is known about the Pokémon Pinchers, but if they're bothering Pokémon, they're sure to become enemies of the Pokémon Rangers!
One of the more dangerous bosses of the Pokémon Pinchers is the shrewd Red Eyes. He's the one who has organized these evildoers and gives them their commands.
Blue Eyes is another of the leaders of the Pokémon Pinchers. She works with a different team than Red Eyes's. It seems that she's highly interested in the legends of the Oblivia region.
Purple Eyes may be the leader of the Pokémon Pinchers, but you'll soon learn that someone else is secretly giving him commands! Purple Eyes is attempting to awaken Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres in the hope that they will help unlock a great and secret power for his unknown leader.
Arley lives a quiet life as a lumberjack in Cocona Village, but he was once known as "Arley the Destroyer," a feared wrestler! What's more, he's never stopped training since his wrestling days, so he's incredibly strong.
